Mike Gross, the 24-year-old two-time champion of the Fairmount, Indiana James Dean Look-Alike Contest, returns to James Dean's home town for his third competition— now the same age James Dean was when he died. Since the 1960s, the town has hosted this festival, judged by Dean’s few remaining high school classmates who seek to see their friend’s soul in the winner’s eyes.
Mike, having embodied Dean so convincingly before, receives letters from Dean's old friends and family who write to him as if he were Jimmy himself, and strange women even ask him to father their children to carry on Dean’s iconic looks. As Mike attends what may be his final contest, he begins to wonder: what comes after his time as Dean?
